Australian Standards and Compliance Requirements
Detailing accuracy means nothing if it doesn't comply with the codes that govern Australian construction. The main standards involved are:
AS 4100
(Steel Structures) — Governs the design of steel members and connections, including bolt capacities, weld design, and member strength checks. Connection drawings must reflect AS 4100-compliant capacities, not generic defaults.
NCC
(National Construction Code) — Sets the overarching building requirements, including structural adequacy, fire safety, and accessibility, that every building permit application must satisfy.
AS/NZS 1170
(Structural Design Actions) — Covers wind, snow, and other action loads used to determine the forces a structure and its connections must resist. Wind loading in particular varies significantly by region, and cyclone-classified areas in northern Australia require specific detailing attention.
